A Christmas Fence Story: Scrooge vs. The Spirits

Every year, the holidays bring back the same familiar cast of characters: Santa, the elves, a few overly enthusiastic neighbors who put their lights up on November 1st… and of course, Ebenezer Scrooge. But this time, he’s starring in a slightly different Christmas tale — one I decided to capture in today’s artwork.

In the image, Scrooge stands at a sturdy, freshly built fence, clutching a large, old-fashioned key. Behind him: safety, privacy, and peace. On the other side: the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, floating ominously like they just walked out of a Victorian paranormal investigation.

And honestly — if anyone needed a fence before the holidays… it’s Scrooge.

Instead of being dragged through time, forced to confront his questionable life choices, or shown the grim warnings of the future, this version of Scrooge took matters into his own hands. He built a solid fence, locked the gate, and decided, “You know what? Maybe I don’t need ghosts walking through my walls tonight.”

It’s the funniest kind of holiday logic:
If the spirits can’t get in, they can’t give you life-changing moral lessons at 3AM.

But behind the humor, the image plays with a surprisingly relatable idea — the holidays bring chaos, and sometimes the best gift you can give yourself is a little boundary-setting. In Scrooge’s case, that boundary just happens to be literal. A good, strong fence. Something that says, “Not today, supernatural intruders.”

And let's be honest: If Scrooge had hired a good fencing company before Christmas Eve, the whole story might’ve gone a lot differently.

Behind the Image Inspiration

I wanted to take a classic Christmas character and throw him into a modern homeowner scenario — the kind people in Knoxville, Farragut, Maryville, Lenoir City, and surrounding Tennessee areas deal with every winter.

Cold weather.
Holiday stress.
Unexpected visitors.
And the eternal question: Why is my fence leaning like that?

So the artwork blends:

  • Victorian Christmas atmosphere

  • Humor

  • A touch of spooky, whimsical energy

  • Realistic fencing imagery

  • And the idea that sometimes, a secure fence is the real hero

Holiday Humor, But Still Useful

The whole piece doubles as a reminder of something practical:

A good fence keeps out more than ghosts.

It keeps kids safer.
Pets in the yard.
Property lines clear.
Unwanted visitors out.
And it gives your home more privacy, security, and curb appeal during the season when everything else feels chaotic.

Scrooge might be trying to avoid ghosts…
But for regular homeowners, a fence is just smart planning.
